What I do

Three kinds of work, in plain language

Tuning, repairs, and regulation are the three things most pianos need over the years. Here is what each one actually means.

Tuning

A piano drifts out of tune with the seasons, the room it lives in, and the hours it gets played. A tuning brings the whole instrument back to pitch together, not only the notes that sound wrong to you. Most pianos sound best with a visit once or twice a year.

Repairs

Sticky keys, a pedal that won't hold, a broken string, a buzz that wasn't there last spring. Most of what goes wrong with a piano can be put right where it stands, in your home, without moving the instrument.

Regulation

Regulation is about how the keys feel and respond: the weight of the touch, how evenly it carries from note to note, how quickly a key comes back up under your fingers. When a piano feels stiff, heavy, or sluggish, this is the work that addresses it.

Also available: voicing, cleaning, and a look at a piano before you buy it.

Setting the pin — the quiet part of the work

Meet the technician

Ali Hami

Ali has spent more than 35 years tuning and repairing pianos. He learned the work well enough to do it in both the United States and Canada, and he now looks after pianos all over San Diego County.

His visits tend to be quiet ones. He listens to the instrument, asks what you have noticed when you play, and then tells you what would actually help — in terms you can follow, without a sales pitch attached.

Some pianos need a tuning. Some need a repair. Some only need someone experienced to look them over.
